GrassProtecta installed for Grass Parking at Loyola University Sports Stadium
GrassProtecta™ grass reinforcement mesh has been installed at Loyola University, Baltimore, MD. USA to reinforce the grass area directly adjacent to the main soccer field to create auxiliary grass parking during games & tournaments. Over 150,000ft² of GrassProtecta was installed to support vehicles over the existing and newly sown grass area.

Project Rationale:
With the recent completion of a new sports complex, Loyola University was in need of additional event parking at the soccer and lacrosse stadium. The new facility had already reached its maximum allowable impervious surface area under the current zoning restrictions. In addition, the project was completed over a capped landfill site, which posed a number of constraints in regard to topography and soil conditions. They needed a cost-effective approach that would double capacity without increasing impervious cover.
Solution:
Based on the intended frequency of use and current site conditions, Loyola University selected GrassProtecta – Standard to reinforce the grass area directly adjacent to the main soccer field to create auxiliary parking during games & tournaments. Over 150,000ft² of GrassProtecta was installed to support vehicle over the existing, newly sown grass area. GrassProtecta was chosen due to its load bearing capacity over the soil profile, which will mitigate compaction and protect the vegetative growth. The stadium more than doubled the capacity of parking without adding any additional impervious surface.
Conclusion:
Using GrassProtecta, Loyola University doubled its parking capacity at their new sports complex without adding any additional impervious surface area. The added capacity will reduce the amount of rented parking and transportation needed for sporting events, greatly reducing transportation costs and quickly paying for project costs. The new installation creates a multifunctional green space that serves as both a recreational space and parking structure as needed without generating additional stormwater or changing the aesthetic view from the sports complex.
